As ATM technology was deployed, interest in using ATM<br \/>\nover satellite links has emerged. However, satellite Links have<br \/>\ncharacteristics different from the environment for which ATM was<br \/>\ndesigned. There are various alternatives for transporting ATM cells<br \/>\nover satellite links. Typically, to select a specific transport<br \/>\nmechanism, end-users, service providers, or network designers have<br \/>\nto consider the performance impacts, bandwidth utilization, power<br \/>\nrequirements, operations and reliability aspects. For example, to<br \/>\nimprove the physical layer performance, and hence the performance<br \/>\nof higher layers of the ATM stack, a user may employ a powerful FEC<br \/>\nmechanism at the satellite modem. Conversely, another user may<br \/>\nchoose to employ some other network solution that combines more<br \/>\nefficient power and bandwidth techniques. This document addresses<br \/>\nthe latter solution as it introduces a network device that provides<br \/>\npowerful, dynamic FEC and data compression techniques for better<br \/>\nbandwidth utilization. This CASI provides the specifications for<br \/>\nimplementing a network device between the terrestrial ATM network<br \/>\ninterface and a conventional satellite modem. This CASI will allow<br \/>\ninteroperability among different vendor equipment that provides the<br \/>\nfeatures that are described in this document.<\/p>\n<p>There are various standards for ATM that have been developed by<br \/>\nthe ATM Forum (ATM-F) and the International Telecommunication Union<br \/>\n(ITIJ). In particular, the ATM Forum has developed the &#034;Traffic<br \/>\nManagement Specification (TM 4.0). The TM specification contains<br \/>\nsections on ATM service architecture, Quality of Service, Traffic<br \/>\nContract, and procedures for traffic management. On the other hand,<br \/>\nthe ITU-Telecommunication Sector has developed a series of<br \/>\nrecommendations on ATM that deal with reference architectures,<br \/>\ncongestion control, network interfaces, performance, operations and<br \/>\nmaintenance principles, etc. Two recommendations that deal with<br \/>\nnetwork performance and architecture issues are ITU-T<br \/>\nRecommendation 1.356 &#034;B-ISDN ATM Layer Cell Transfer Performance&#034;<br \/>\nand ITU-R Recommendation S.{Doc.4\/44] (&#034;Performance for B-ISDN ATM<br \/>\nvia Satellite&#034;).
