For bolted joints,<br \/>\ndesign strategies are based, in the first instance, on the nature<br \/>\nand magnitude of loads applied within the system. If a shear load<br \/>\nis applied to the bolted joint then the phenomena of bolt<br \/>\nself-loosening is likely to occur and this Item gives guidance on<br \/>\nusing lock nuts or other thread locking devices to maintain the<br \/>\ncontact between the parts of the bolted assembly and also to<br \/>\nprevent unscrewing of the bolt threads.
