ESDU 14003 examines the relationships between the various Data
Items which are relevant to the design of bolted joints that can be
found in the Stress and Strength of Components Series. In this
Item, the general function of a bolted joint and the role of
pretension in securing the bolt is discussed. For bolted joints,
design strategies are based, in the first instance, on the nature
and magnitude of loads applied within the system. If a shear load
is applied to the bolted joint then the phenomena of bolt
self-loosening is likely to occur and this Item gives guidance on
using lock nuts or other thread locking devices to maintain the
contact between the parts of the bolted assembly and also to
prevent unscrewing of the bolt threads. The behaviour of bolted
joints in cases when a static or a fatigue load is applied to the
bolted joint is also considered in this Item.
